When may you use your high beam headlights?

High beam headlights are designed to provide increased visibility when driving at night, particularly in low-light conditions. Using high beams is most appropriate in rural areas where there is little light from street lamps or other vehicles. When there is no oncoming traffic, drivers can use high beams without blinding others, maximizing their field of vision and helping them see further down the road.

In urban areas, high beams can create glare for other drivers and pedestrians due to the presence of streetlights and traffic. Therefore, using them there is generally not advisable. Although they can be used on any road at night, the key condition is that there should be no oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead; otherwise, it can impair other drivers' visibility. As for foggy conditions, high beams can reflect off the fog, rain, or mist, reducing visibility and making it more challenging to see. In such situations, low beams or fog lights are preferred to minimize this reflection and improve visibility.
